Next year, Gothenburg will be one of the thematic focuses of the Göteborg Film Festival. The festival will dig into the film archives and take the pulse of contemporary film to write Gothenburg’s film history during the upcoming festival.

Due to this, the festival together with Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary invites you to a competition where everyone has the chance to become this year’s vignette filmmaker. The only thing that is required to compete is a film idea on the theme of Gothenburg. The festival then provides a budget of SEK 50,000 to finance the production for winning proposals.

You do not need to be an established film-maker to take part. If a film-maker submits the winning entry, the production funds will be used to produce the vignette film. If not, the festival will use a production company to turn the idea into a film, based on the winner’s instructions. It will be the best film concept that determines who wins the competition. “Together with Göteborg Film Festival, we are proud to finally be able to invite you to this competition; best idea for vignette film 2023. The anniversary is based on Gothenburgers’ participation, ideas and throughout several occasions over the years we have worked with open calls, including the Jubilee Song that was developed in 2019 and when the anniversary design was created in 2020. Now it’s time to pay tribute to Gothenburg in yet another expression, moving image! We are very much looking forward to that,” says Mia Samuelsson, Artistic Director of Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary at Göteborg & Co.

“With the festival’s focus on Gothenburg, we want to revel in the city’s cinematic environments and stories, but also challenge established notions of Gothenburg. Therefore, it feels very exciting to let the place as a vignette film to the city’s inhabitants. The vignette film always evokes a lot of emotions, and the image of Gothenburg is of course a topic that engages many. I look forward to being surprised by which Gothenburg images the people of Gothenburg want to convey themselves,” says Jonas Holmberg, Artistic Director, Göteborg Film Festival.

The competition is being run in partnership between Göteborg Film Festival and Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary, and will be project managed by Göteborg & Co, part of the City of Gothenburg.
