During excavations in Nya Lödöse Church in 1916 (today’s Gamlestaden), the remains of a young woman with a silver heart pendant around her neck were found beneath the floor. The discovery dates back to the 16th century. Who was this woman? Why did she wear the locket? Why was buckwheat stuffed inside it? And what does the small piece of parchment found in the heart’s center actually say?

To this day, the secret of the silver heart remains undisclosed.

About the musical

The musical “The Secret of the Silver Heart” is a part of Gothenburg’s 400th Anniversary. Facts meet fiction on a journey that weaves together human destinies in Gothenburg – past and present. We follow several individuals in three different eras – people whose lives are affected by the pendant in various ways. The inspiration comes from an exhibition at the City Museum, where the medieval silver heart is featured.

“The Secret of the Silver Heart” is performed in the historic premises of Kronhuset from September 22nd to 25th, with an orchestra led by Henrik Magnusson. The roles are portrayed by students from the Ballet Academy’s Musical Education program, which celebrates 40 years as a professional training program.

Text and Music: Jenny and Martin Schaub
