How the king will celebrate Gothenburg’s 400 years and 50 years on the throne on June 4
Royal cortege with horse and carriage, speech to the citizens of Gothenburg at Gustaf Adolfs torg, inauguration of the Jubileumsparken and the Harbor pools, as well as a festive gala concert with the Gothenburg opera house. That is what's on the program when the King and Queen of Sweden visits Gothenburg on the city's birthday on June 4 to celebrate Gothenburg's 400 years and the King's 50 years on the throne.
– We are very happy to be able to welcome the Royal Couple to celebrate Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary together with the citizens of Gothenburg and visitors. Their presence gives extra shine to the Anniversary Festival, which is the start of a whole summer of celebrations, says Therese Brusberg, head of Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary at Göteborg & Co.
The royal cortege with horse and carriage goes from Götaplatsen to Gustaf Adolfs torg, and everyone is welcome to experience it along the Avenyn. In Bältespännarparken, the Culture School will perform. Once at Gustaf Adolfs torg, the King gives a speech to the citizens of Gothenburg.
Inauguration with a Party and gala concert
After his own celebration, the King continues to Hisingen and Frihamnen, where the Jubileumsparken with its new Harbor pools is inaugurated. And then it’s time for the Festival and Gala Concert with the Gothenburg opera house and Ane Brun at Gothenburg’s Anniversary Festival in Frihamnen. The concert offers opera, choral works, musicals, dance and anniversary speeches, and Lotta Lundgren guides the audience through the program.
The King’s program in Frihamnen 4 June
At 3 pm The royal couple arrives at the Jubileumsparken to attend the official opening of the park and the harbor pools. Municipal council chairman Aslan Akbas will give an opening speech.
At 3:45-5:15 pm The royal couple attends the Gala Concert with the Gothenburg opera house and Ane Brun. Musical highlights such as pieces from Carmen and The Flying Dutchman, the hit musical Wicked and the official anniversary song “Vi vill leva, vi vill dö i Göteborg”. Ane Brun participates with Gothenburg opera house’s Danskompani and Gothenburg opera house’s Orchestra in an excerpt from choreographer Kenneth Kvarnström’s all-art work 12 songs. The presenter is TV presenter and food writer Lotta Lundgren.

About Gothenburg’s Anniversary Festival, 2–5 June
The Anniversary Festival, which has free entry and is open to all ages, takes place on a 70,000 square meter area in the centrally located Frihamnen. Three stages, exciting food selection, activities and experiences on the surface equivalent to eleven football pitches where the largest tent stage has room for an audience as large as Scandinavium.

Gothenburg is celebrating 400 years and invites you to Gothenburg’s Anniversary Celebrations 2 June–3 September 2023. Everything is based on a city development journey based on the ideas of the citizens of Gothenburg and thousands of initiatives that now culminate in a fantastic celebration for everyone. The celebration begins with a four-day Anniversary Festival in Frihamnen with music, food, dance, humor, swimming, games and lots of activities and surprises – with free entry for everyone. During the summer, the celebration continues at several locations in Gothenburg and ends with a final weekend full of experiences.
