In this book, four researchers have studied the life paths and movement patterns of residents in Gothenburg during the period 1900–1950. It is about major events in ordinary people’s lives such as getting their first job, starting a family, changing homes and jobs and leaving the labor market; changes between different phases of life that are rarely highlighted in traditional history books.

Getting your first job, starting a family, changing homes and jobs and eventually leaving the labour market are key events in our lives. Despite this, the changes between the phases of life are rarely highlighted in traditional history books. In this book, economic historians examine the life paths and mobility patterns of residents in the mature industrial city of Gothenburg between 1900–1950. With the help of the local authorities’ population register, the researchers have followed a random sample of Gothenburgers over time, and present here new results of their research.
