Holy Rooms Gothenburg – a city with many religion

Around Gothenburg there are over a hundred different denominations. The book and the exhibition Holy Rooms ask questions about the role of religion in today’s society, where the images illustrate people’s common longing for hope and holiness.

The purpose of Holy Rooms is to increase knowledge of one’s own and others’ religious traditions. The pictures invite to a conversation about how the presence of religions in Gothenburg has affected the city and its inhabitants.

Many of the places of worship are well known, others more unknown. Some rooms are ascetic, others are richly decorated. Some rooms are very visible, others are more hidden.

Through knowledge, prejudices and possible misunderstandings can be processed. Holy rooms become part of an increased dialogue and collaboration.

How can the images be used?
  • What are my sacred rooms?
  • What similarities and differences are there in the rooms?
  • Where can I find my own sacred rooms
  • What fills the sacred spaces for function in society today?

These are questions to ask as you approach the images in the Holy Room.
