All education has undergone major changes during the last century. Six years of public schooling has become nine years of primary school, and graduation from school is now after secondary school. In reality most have twelve years of public schooling. Daycare institutions have developed into kindergartens. Teacher training and many other vocational courses are now linked to universities and colleges. Practical knowledge is now in the background. Folk High Schools aimed at personal development and individually tailored adult education has had a major impact on immigrant integration.

The universities are significantly transformed and multiplied, as the number of students. Technology has facilitated information search and the role of libraries have therefore changed. With the changes the view on education has changed too and contradictions between the humanities/social sciences and natural sciences, between theoretical and practical knowledge, have evolved.

In this stimulating anthology, these transformative events are described by specialists in each field. Although the volume is about “One Hundred Years in Gothenburg”, the larger story applies to the whole country.

Wanda Klintberg is associate professor at Chalmers University, she has held administrative management positions at Gothenburg University, and she is a former head of administration at Malmö University. She has contributed to the book and she is the editor along with Gudrun Nyberg, physician, professor emeritus, and author of several acclaimed books. Nyberg is also the instigator of and editor in chief for the whole series in eight volumes, “One Hundred Years in Gothenburg”.
