In this historic book about medicine, Gudrun Nyberg has written about the society and healthcare in a popular science genre. The fact that the focus is Gothenburg in this very beautifully illustrated book does not make it provincial at all. The situation and development in the whole country was often remarkably similar.
The last hundred years have brought enormous change to society, including healthcare. Compared to a century ago, technological developments have been transforming with advanced diagnostics and treatment. Antibiotics, hormones, chemotherapy, and other medicines have led to a dramatic change in disease outlook.
Nyberg describes comprehensively about staff categories and tasks, about psychiatry, skin, and sexually transmitted diseases, as well as about ears and eyes. Surgery with intensive care and cancer treatments are covered. Women’s diseases and childbirth, as well as childcare, are addressed. Treatment of infectious disease covered in-depth by co-author Johan Lindberg. Similarly, internal medicine with e.g., diabetes, ulcers, cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary medicine, allergology etc. is included under relevant headings. Several important physicians and researchers are presented in relation to time and specialist area. The book has a wealth of illustrations.
Gudrun Nyberg is the instigator and main author of this historic medicines book. She is herself a physician and researcher and has previously worked at both Sahlgrenska Hospital in Gothenburg and Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm. She is also the author of several popular science books related to medicine and science. Nyberg lives in Gothenburg. Johan Lindberg, also a physician and researcher in Gothenburg, is responsible for one of the chapters.
