This is the story of how the green areas in Gothenburg has developed through the centuries. The beloved avenues and parks are only a small part of everything that grows and thrives in the city today.

The avenues, the playgrounds, the sea baths, the housing estates, the riverbank, the allotments and the favorite park. All of them are parts of the green city, the one that grows and changes with the years and seasons. This book recaptures the four-hundred-year history of Gothenburg’s gardens and parks. This is the story of the visionaries who planted the trees hundreds of years ago so that we can walk under them today. A story about the city that rose out of the water and was helped by Dutch engineers to float. And most importantly, a story of a city that must be looked after and cared for, changed and refined, developed and protected. Gardens and parks might be the most valuable resource in any city.

The book was produced in collaboration with Gothenburg’s City Environment Administration.
