During the summer of 1834 cholera cripples Gothenburg. The young Emily Löwentin volunteers at one of the newly established epidemic hospitals. She barely starts her work before the epidemic ravages her safe existence that until now has been her world.

As a woman who in those days was required to be under guardianship, she must fight for the right to control her life and property. Resistance comes not only from her nearest relatives, but also from the entire society, where a woman of knowledge and power is considered to be a threat to the order. At a crucial moment, a young man turns up, claiming to be her brother.

‘The Impossible’ is a fast-paced thriller grounded in history. It is set in a pre-industrial Gothenburg. Trade and shipping are accumulating wealth and fortunes – and the wayward sea or brutal business world can destroy everything overnight.
