Home / Gothenburg turns 400 years – this happens in 2021
11 January 2021

– After the decision to change the schedule due to the pandemic, we are now planning for celebrations in several stages. 2021 will be a formal and historic celebration of our official birthday June 4th and the big public celebration will be held in 2023, says Therese Brusberg, head of Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary, Göteborg & Co.

When Gothenburg enters its anniversary year on New Year’s Eve, the city makes it to the tunes of its very own anniversary song. Vi vill leva, vi vill dö i Göteborg by Katarina Hemlin will be played from the German Christinae Church’s bell tower at 16.21 on New Year’s Eve, something that will then be done every day throughout 2021. Another actor who invests in paying attention to Gothenburg’s anniversary year almost everyday is P4 Göteborg, which every weekday starting January 4th celebrates the anniversary with an episode.

On the birthday itself, June 4th, there will be a historic and formal celebration that will be celebrated in different ways. In addition to flagging, salutes and birthday greetings, Gothenburg’s history is shaped through installations in the historic quarters around Kronhuset. The outdoor exhibition “Göteborg berättar” with 100 stories from citizens of Gothenburg, opens at Gustaf Adolfs Torg and at the Museum of Gothenburg inaugurates the 20th century exhibition “Grejen med Göteborg”.

– Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary is about, together with the citizens of Gothenburg, making Gothenburg an even better city. In 2021, it is time to celebrate our history and the ambition is for as many people as possible to feel included in the celebration, even if we cannot gather at large events, says Therese Brusberg..

In 2021, the Hisingsbron will also be inaugurated, Centenary Park will be expanded, the anniversary camp Side by Side and Göteborgsvarvet Marathon will take place, to name a few examples.

During 2021, Hisingsbron will be inaugurated and the anniversary camp Side by Side will take place.

Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary

Gothenburg turns 400 in 2021 and Göteborgs Stad wants to celebrate this by developing Gothenburg into an even better place to visit, live and work in. Due to covid-19, the anniversary was changed by a decision in the City Council on September 10th, 2020. This means that in 2021there will be a formal, historic celebration of the official birthday of June 4th and an anniversary calendar brings together and draws attention to activities carried out by various anniversary actors throughout the year. Collaboration on important issues in the city and region continues and the large public anniversary program is planned to be in 2023 together with citizens of Gothenburg and visitors from all over the world. Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary is project-led by Göteborg & Co, which is part of Göteborgs Stad.
