Home / Gothenburg’s library and cultural center celebrates Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary
29 May 2023

— We are very proud of our anniversary initiative and invite citizens of Gothenburg throughout the city to fantastic cultural events for children, young people and adults at our libraries and cultural centers. It will be playful and colourful. Look out for the anniversary celebration near you, says Christina Roos, project manager for the anniversary celebration at the department of Gothenburg’s library and cultural center.

The celebration begins in Frihamnen. Between 2 and 5 June there is a reading tent here that offers 75 square meters of reading pleasure for children of all ages. Librarians read aloud to children, the author Andréas Sjölander is on hand with the new children’s book Alla tiders Göteborg and the artist Linda Spåman leads a workshop in painting portraits. And of course there is the option of borrowing books home. The Reading Tent is a collaboration between the Libraries in Gothenburg and the Book Fair in Gothenburg.

Several libraries invite you to anniversary parties. There will be whole days of celebration with storytimes in several languages, children’s theater, detective story school and creative creation. Welcome to the libraries in Kortedala, Backa, Högsbo, Hammarkullen, Torslanda, Biskopsgården, Opaltorget and the City Library. On June 11, the City Library invites 37 poets to read their poetry for 400 minutes at Götaplatsen. On the same day, a literary walk is held in Slottsskogen where Kristian Wedel talks about Gothenburg writers.

Kulturhusen celebrates Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary with an extra golden edge to the summer’s activities. Frölunda Kulturhus is involved in organizing Positivparken’s day on June 3. Then you can listen to Gothenburg songs, see a dance performance, attend a dance workshop, learn Bollywood dance and experience an acrobatic street show. On August 19, Positivparken will be filled with music and theater. Blå Stället in Angered celebrates its anniversary for five days between 3 and 7 July with music, theatre, exhibitions and workshops. Kulturhuset Bergsjön turns one year old this summer and is therefore taking the opportunity to celebrate a little extra, including with the 1st anniversary on August 20 and the recurring Tellus Festival on September 3. Kulturhuset Kåken also celebrates on September 3 with a big, green cultural festival with activities for both children and adults.

Other anniversary activities are Sommarunderhållningen, Gothenburg’s largest long festival, which celebrates with concerts at Slottsskogsteatern. Through Skolbio Göteborg, school classes can watch films about the local environments of young Gothenburg citizens and take a film walk through the city. Young cultural summer workers entertain on the city’s trams and on the outdoor stage at the Stora Teatern.

— We have a broad program that will tickle the imagination of children, both those who are used to reading and those who are a little less used to reading. Among other things, young people will receive a free book known from Tiktok and will be invited to creative workshops with artists from Gothenburg. For the adults, we have captivating concerts, creations and musical quizzes with a Gothenburg theme. There is something for everyone here, says Christina Roos.
