Dreams come true

Back in 2009, the City of Gothenburg decided to use its 400th anniversary as a milestone and a catalyst for the city’s development. Thousands of ideas about how the city can be developed in connection with the anniversary have been collected from Gothenburgers, the city’s administrations and companies, and seven perspective groups. Everyone was invited to get involved and share their dreams, ideas and suggestions for the future. Based on these, three themes were identified for the anniversary: ‘By the Water’, ‘Building Bridges’ and ‘Open Spaces’.

Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary has four parts:

  • A process to make things happen in connection with urban development.
  • Focus years have created opportunities for broad collaboration and platforms to involve the entire city around set themes such as young influence, health and sustainable growth.
  • An official historic celebration on June 4, 2021.
  • A three-month public celebration in the summer of 2023, showcasing and celebrating all that the anniversary has generated. The long-term initiative will continue during and after the anniversary celebrations.

A unique project

We believe that our working model is unique. We have chosen an open process in which everyone who wants to take part can do so. Overall, this involves the participation of thousands of people from many different areas. Social, environmental and economic sustainability has been a common theme throughout the planning process, with the vision that Gothenburg should be an innovative, open and inclusive city where all residents feel a sense of purpose and participation.
